Gretchen Whitmer Calls For Action On ‘Gun Violence Public Health Crisis’ Following Oxford School Shooting

Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) released a statement Wednesday afternoon calling for action on “the gun violence public health crisis” following a school shooting that killed four students in Oxford, Michigan. 

“This is a time for Michiganders to come together for the Oxford community,” Whitmer said in a video she posted to Twitter. 

“We have a responsibility to protect each other from the gun violence public health crisis that we all face as Americans,” she continued. “We have to build a state where no one is afraid to go to school, or work, or a house of worship, or even their own home.” 

Whitmer released the video after news broke of a fourth student dying from the shooting.

In early November, Whitmer “proposed a $30 million investment to fund violence prevention and reduction initiatives.” The proposal was a part of a larger push by Whitmer to help police seize illegal guns in Michigan, according to Mlive. “We must put Michiganders first by investing in law enforcement officers, getting illegal guns off our streets, and pursuing investments in jobs, justice, and education,” the governor said in August.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel also made a statement on gun violence after the shooting, saying, “We must act to properly address gun violence in our schools and the ongoing threat of another unconscionable tragedy if we continue to only offer thoughts and prayers. Our kids deserve better.”

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) also tweeted Wednesday afternoon that “if we’re to truly honor the victims, we must take action to end these tragedies once and for all.”

Justin Shilling, 17, died from gunshot wounds Wednesday morning at McClaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.

The shooting, which occurred yesterday afternoon, claimed the lives of three other students: 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin, 16-year-old Tate Myre, and 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana. 

“It’s chilling. It’s absolutely cold-hearted, murderous. Our forensic team was working all night. So far, I believe they’ve recovered over 30 shell casings. We believe he fired over 30 shots,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. 

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the weapon used in the shooting was purchased on November 26th, four days ago by the boy’s father. The gun had 15 round magazines. We found two of them. There allegedly was three… more than likely that third magazine will be found there,” Sheriff Bouchard explained. 

Last night, local authorities served a search warrant at the suspect’s home where they allegedly recovered a cell phone. Officials have not yet pointed to any motive for the shooting.
