Gov. Abbott requests appeal of FEMA’s denial of emergency disaster declaration

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has requested an appeal of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) denial of emergency declaration in regards to the ongoing border crisis that has filtered in an influx of migrants at the Texas border.

In a letter addressed to Joe Biden on Thursday, the GOP governor said “Texas will stand with the federal government in responding to the border crisis.” He also said the Lone Star state shouldn’t have to stand alone or withstand the financial burden without federal assistance.

“This crisis has taken a serious toll on the Texas border communities, first responders, and the local non-profit sector,” said Abbott. “Local officials and Texas citizens are fatigued and running out of resources to respond to the ongoing border crisis.”

Abbott said Texans are resilient and would continue to “respond, recover and mitigate” against the crisis, however, federal assistance is still needed.

This comes as Abbott has approved billions of dollars of funding for border security efforts and deployed thousands of National Guard troops to address the crisis.
