GOP Senators Revolt Against Democrats’ Bid To Replace Feinstein On Judiciary

Republicans are becoming more and more opposed to a plan to temporarily replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein( D – CA ) on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn( R – TN ) was the most recent member to voice opposition to the proposal on Monday, which could swiftly end the impasse preventing the advancement of judicial nominees as Feinstein deals with shingles-related issues.

In a tweet, Blackburn stated that” I will not support [ Senate Majority Leader ] Chuck Schumer’s’s proposal to oust Senator Feinstein from the Judiciary Committee and fill the court with activist judges.”

She continued,” To completely change America, President Joe Biden wants the Senate to rubber stamp his incompetent and contentious magistrates.”

Since early March, when Feinstein announced that she had been admitted to a San Francisco hospital after being diagnosed with tiles, she has been away from Capitol Hill.

Feinstein asked Sen. Schumer( D – NY) to temporarily replace her on the Judiciary Committee last week as she faced calls from other Democrats to withdraw, acknowledging that her” lack may delay the critical work” of the screen.

When my health company determines that it is safer for me to come, I intend to return as soon as possible, according to Feinstein. ” I’m’m still committed to the job, and I’ll’ll keep working from home in San Francisco in the interim.”

Blackburn speaks out against the plan after Sen. Tom Cotton( R – AR ), who, like his colleague from Tennessee, is a member of the Judiciary Committee. He tweeted over the weekend that Republicans shouldn’t help Democrats confirm Joe Biden’s’s most extreme nominees for the courts.

Replacing Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee would require 60 seats in the tightly contested Senate, with unanimous consent appearing to be off the board. To review the transfer, at least 10 Republicans must join forces with Democrats and independents.

Dick Durbin, the chairman of the judiciary( D-IL ), recently acknowledged that Feinstein’s’s absence is impeding the panel, which is divided 10 to 10 along party lines without her, from advancing Bidens’ nominees to federal courts across the country. A connect vote is a losing vote in council, so I didn’t take contenders into account in this situation, he told CNN.

Schumer stated to reporters on Monday that he intends to propose a quality this week and is hopeful that Republicans will meet Democrats in choosing an interim replacement. The majority leader stated that he intends to discuss the possibility of a swap with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell( R – KY ), who recently made his way back to Capitol Hill after regaining his balance.

Feinstein is the oldest senator in the Senate at the age of 89, and in recent years, some acquaintances have expressed worries about her psychological health. Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee, three well-known House Democrats, have announced programs to unseat Feinstein in the Senate. Feinstein announced in February that she would not run for re-election in 2024.
