GOP candidate injured in basketball game, uncertain if he can stand at debate: report.
Republican Governor Doug Burgum Injured in Basketball Game Ahead of GOP Debate
Republican presidential candidate and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum suffered an injury while playing pickup basketball in Milwaukee on Tuesday night, raising concerns about his participation in Wednesday night’s highly anticipated GOP debate.
Burgum, 67, was rushed to the emergency room, according to CNN’s Dana Bash. It remains uncertain whether he will be able to stand at the debate, as confirmed by his campaign to Fox News. However, as of Wednesday morning, Burgum has been discharged from the hospital, and candidates are scheduled to take part in a walk-through before the debate in Milwaukee.
Burgum successfully met the requirements set by the Republican National Committee to appear on stage, surpassing the minimum polling criteria and reaching the 40,000 individual donor threshold. His campaign’s unique strategy of distributing $20 gift cards for $1 donations played a significant role in achieving this milestone. The governor, who has a background in business and conservative governance, entered the Republican race in June, emphasizing his credentials.
“If you want more small-town common sense in Washington and our big cities, we’ll make that happen,” Burgum told a crowd gathered for his announcement. “We need a governor and business leader who understands this changing economy. I want to earn your vote.”
The Republican debate, which marks the first clash among candidates in the 2024 White House race, will not feature former President Donald Trump, the current GOP frontrunner. Instead, Trump has opted for a sit-down interview with former Fox News Host Tucker Carlson. Trump’s decision to skip the debate has drawn criticism from some of his Republican opponents, given his substantial lead in the polls.
