GOP plan to overturn Biden student loan forgiveness could attract Democratic support

A Republican plan to strike down President Joe Biden‘s plan to cancel billions in student debt might be attracting Democratic senators.

Republicans’ method is to use the Congressional Review Act, which gives Congress the authority to overturn rules regarding Biden’s forgiveness of student loans, within a predetermined amount of time. The Congressional Review Act would compel Democratic legislators to take a position on the policy, even though Biden would almost certainly reject any attempt by Congress to end his forgiveness plan, according to the Wall Street Journal.

After the Government Accountability Office determined that Biden’s plan to forgive up to$ 20,000 in student loans is subject to the Administrative Procedures Act and can be overturned by a resolution of the Congressional Review Act, Republicans in Congress are now permitted to use it. Sen. As a result of this decision, On March 17, Ernst, Bill Cassidy( R – LA ), and John Cornyn( St. X ) declared they would introduce a resolution to nullify Biden’s plan for forgiveness.

The student loan program offered by President Biden does not” forgive” debt. According to Cassidy, it simply shifts the cost from those who voluntarily took out loans to people who never attended college or made sacrifices to repay their debts. This resolution forbids these Americans from footing the bill for this reckless and cruel plan because their debts differ from those of the favored team the Biden administration has chosen.

Just 30 senators have indicated their support for the test, and it only needs a simple majority to pass thanks to the GAO’s conviction. Even though Democrats now control the Senate following the midterm elections in 2022, hardly all Democrats, including Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Joe Manchin( D-NV )

Cortez Masto stated that while I will discuss the entire Agency when it is published, I disagree with President Biden’s senior action on student loans because it fails to address the fundamental issues that make attending college costly.

By no later than the end of June, the Supreme Court is anticipated to rule on Biden’s system for student funding.
