GOP probes alleged effort by Hunter Biden’s lawyers to punish IRS whistleblowers.
House Republicans Launch Inquiry into Treatment of IRS Whistleblowers
House Republicans have announced a new inquiry into the treatment of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblowers who raised concerns about the criminal investigation of Hunter Biden, the son of the president. The whistleblowers allege that top officials within the IRS slow-walked the investigation, potentially preventing serious charges from being brought against Biden.
“Hunter Biden’s legal team is engaged in a brazen effort to intimidate and harass the brave Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblowers who exposed numerous apparent irregularities in the Department’s investigation of Hunter Biden,” the letter said.
A trio of committee chairmen, including Jason Smith (R-MO), James Comer (R-KY), and Jim Jordan (R-OH), sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding records that could reveal communications between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Biden’s legal team. The committee chairmen are seeking transparency and accountability in the handling of the probe.
Defending the Whistleblowers
The GOP chairmen also defended the whistleblowers, stating that they followed the appropriate process by raising genuine concerns about the Department’s investigation into Hunter Biden. They argue that the whistleblowers should be protected and not subjected to intimidation or harassment.
Earlier this year, the whistleblowers provided testimony to Congress, which led to a plea agreement between the DOJ and Biden’s legal team. However, the agreement, dubbed a “sweetheart plea deal” by Republicans, fell apart under scrutiny by a judge who raised concerns about an immunity clause.
Recent developments indicate that special counsel David Weiss intends to seek an indictment against Hunter Biden on gun charges by the end of the month. Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, argues that a pre-trial diversion agreement remains valid and prevents any additional charges from being filed.
Impeachment Inquiry and Next Steps
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced that the three committee leaders, Smith, Comer, and Jordan, will work together in spearheading an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. This inquiry has the potential to embroil the entire Biden family in controversy.
The Daily Wire has reached out to the DOJ and Lowell’s firm for comment on the new letter and the ongoing investigation.
