GOP Congressman Warns of Perverts Exploiting Your Videos at Ring

GOP Congressman Says There Are ‘Perverts at Ring’ Using Your Videos for Devious Reasons

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida launched a scathing attack on Ring doorbells, citing Federal Trade Commission (FTC) documentation that highlights privacy concerns. Gaetz tweeted a video of FTC Chair Lina Khan’s appearance before Congress, accusing Ring of sexually propositioning grandmas, watching people sleep and use the bathroom, and failing to protect users from hackers.

Gaetz referenced the FTC’s findings that a Ring employee viewed thousands of videos of female users in their bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as an unauthorized tunnel that allowed a contractor to access consumer videos. He also mentioned an incident where a Ring employee shared customer information with their ex-husband.

Gaetz also highlighted other instances of privacy violations, including cases where bad actors used Ring’s two-way communication to harass and threaten users. He mentioned incidents where an 87-year-old woman was sexually propositioned and children were subjected to racial slurs.

Khan responded by stating that the FTC had taken enforcement actions. Gaetz expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that Ring should enhance personal security, not expose users to harassment and threats.

The FTC complaint against Ring revealed that an employee viewed thousands of video recordings belonging to female users, focusing on cameras surveilling intimate spaces. Another employee used their access rights to spy on a female colleague. Ring’s failure to implement security measures allowed these incidents to go undetected for months.

The FTC’s order requires Ring to delete illegally viewed images and data from videos and implement new privacy and security measures. Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, emphasized that Ring’s disregard for privacy and security exposed consumers to spying and harassment, and the order sends a clear message that prioritizing profit over privacy is unacceptable.
