GOP calls on Joe Biden to increase defense spending in next budget

Republicans in the House have called for an increase in defense spending after seeing Joe Biden’s proposed defense budget. During a visit to an Ohio Air Force base on Friday, House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) voiced his opposition to the budget, which he argues will decrease U.S. capabilities.
The White House unveiled the proposal at the end of May, which requests $715 billion in defense spending. This is a slight increase from the $703 billion in 2021. Republicans argue it fails to take inflation into account and represents a decrease in spending.

“I don’t believe knowing now what our adversaries capabilities are and what the growth is,” McCarthy explained. “Looking at what General Milley said just the other day inside committee, the advancements from China and Russia. I’m concerned that we are not at the best position we should be.”
This comes after the chairman of the joint chiefs recently called China’s increase in military spending “very serious.”
