GOP-aligned organization releases new ad criticizing Tester’s stance on immigration

A GOP-aligned PAC released an ‍ad targeting Senator Jon Tester’s immigration record post his vote⁣ on impeachment articles against‌ Homeland⁤ Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The ad, part of ⁣a $15.2 million campaign in ⁢Montana by One Nation, accuses Tester of supporting “Biden’s border disaster.” Tester defended his vote stating the trial wouldn’t improve border security, emphasizing the need for bipartisan border legislation.

EXCLUSIVE — A GOP-aligned political action committee released an ad on Tuesday focusing on Sen. Jon Tester‘s (D-MT) immigration record in the days following his vote to dismiss the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The ad is a continuation of a $15.2 million ad buy in Montana from One Nation, a group aligned with Senate GOP leadership, that began in early April and will run through the summer.

The second ad, running statewide on television and digital, spotlights Tester’s votes on immigration and claims the Montana senator supports “Biden’s border disaster.”

“Sen. Tester voted with Washington liberals to stop Trump’s wall. Then, Tester joined with President Biden and voted with the liberals again to help President Biden stop building the wall,” a narrator says in the ad.

Tester joined all Democrats last week to vote to dismiss the impeachment articles against Mayorkas, ending the impeachment trial before it could begin.

In a statement issued after the Senate moved to adjourn, Tester said he voted with Democrats because the impeachment trial would not make the border safer. He called for Congress to pass bipartisan border security legislation.

“What’s happening at our southern border is completely unacceptable, and the Biden administration must do more to keep Montana and our country safe,” Tester said. “I agree with my Republican colleagues who have said this exercise is a distraction that fails to make our country safer. It’s time for President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to use their remaining executive authorities to help secure our border.”

One Nation President and CEO Steven Law seized on Tester’s vote to dismiss the impeachment articles against Mayorkas, calling it evidence of Tester’s “disregard for border security.”

“Senator Tester’s disregard for border security was underscored last week when he voted to dismiss the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas,” Law said in a statement provided to the Washington Examiner. “Senator Tester needs to stop supporting President Biden’s border disaster and support Montanans’ best interests instead.”

The Montana Democrat is in the midst of one of the most competitive Senate election matchups this cycle and is expected to face former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy. The race is one of four “toss-ups,” according to the nonpartisan CookPoliticalReport.

Senate Majority PAC, a group supporting Democrats, also reserved $27 million in ads in the state, signaling the race could see spending well over $100 million.

Tester has been outspoken about the need to vote on a bill that included border security and foreign aid that was negotiated by Republicans earlier this year before former President Donald Trump urged Republicans to kill the deal.

At the end of the One Nation ad, a narrator urges the Montana senator to vote for the Secure The Border Act,  which is a bill that would restart border wall construction and put back in place the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico policy. The bill has not gone anywhere in the upper chamber after it saw no Democratic support in the House.
