Google settles Play Store antitrust lawsuit for $700 million
Google Settles Antitrust Lawsuit for $700 Million
Google has agreed to pay a whopping $700 million and make changes to its app store policies in order to settle an antitrust lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed by a group of 36 states, accused Google of stifling competition and limiting app distribution on Android devices. Although the settlement was announced in September, the details were only revealed on Monday.
Positive Outlook for Android
“This settlement reinforces Android’s commitment to choice and flexibility, while ensuring robust security measures and enabling Google to remain competitive against other operating systems,” stated Wilson White, Google’s vice president for government affairs and public policy.
The settlement includes the creation of a $630 million common fund to benefit consumers, as well as a $70 million fund to cover legal fees, restitution, and other expenses for the states involved.
According to Google, eligible consumers will receive a minimum of $2, with additional payments based on their spending on Google Play between August 16, 2016, and September 30, 2023.
Fortnite Developer Epic Games’ Victory
Last week, Google faced another setback in court when a jury ruled in favor of Fortnite developer Epic Games, determining that Google held an illegal monopoly over its Android app store. The judge overseeing Epic’s trial is expected to decide the amount of relief Google will have to pay in January.
