Golf-No audience for Lyle as he takes final bow on golf’s greatest stage

AUGUSTA, Georgia( Reuters ) Sandy Lyle may be one of the Masters’ most adored champions, but on Saturday at Augusta National, he cut a lonesome figure on his final putt in the early morning rain on an almost deserted 18th green.

The 65-year-old Scot, who had won the 1988 Masters, was the first European person to don the Green Jacket. However, when he had to return on Saturday for a 12-foot putting that would end his weather-delayed second round, the former champions denied him the stirring farewell.

When the horn sounded at 8 a.m. ET( 1200 GMT ) to announce the start of use and reveal the playing area to spectators, Lyle pulled out his royal golden putter for the occasion and double-bogeyed to finish his last competitive round in front of Jason Kokrak, Talor Gooch, their golfers, as well as some maintenance personnel and leaders.

A frenzy of patrons culture walked up the hill past the 18th greens on the way to play out places at Amen Corner as Lyle signed for an 11-over 83 at the scorer’s’s work, unaware of the event taking place next to them. Running is not permitted on Augusta National grounds.

Lyle told reporters,” It’s’s a shame I didn’t get the chance to finish yesterday.” ” Needed 30 more minute.”

We were essentially lining up our putts, and I would be the last to do so.

We made an effort to speak with the official, asking them to please let us begin. However, they abided by the guidelines, and laws are laws, so we had to follow them.

Lyle received standing ovations from the masses as he approached the 18th green on Friday, and they joined in on the protests with slogans of” Let him throw, Let him sett.”

Lyle’s’s respect was unwavering despite the messy side, placing his hand over his brain and kissing the audience for their support as he walked away.

They have been very friendly, grinned Lyle, who began Friday’s’s festivities with cognac and whiskey tasting in the early hours of the morning. Jason Kokrak stood by the natural and applauded for me all the strategy from it, which was more apparent generally yesterday when they all stood up coming up the 18th.

They are pleasant stories that I will take with me when I return home with a positive attitude.

On Saturday, Lyle did see applause as he returned to the 18th in a downpour 30 minutes afterwards to support his friend Larry Mize, the 1987 Masters champion who was about to finish his last round.

Lyle made his way onto the natural handing the Augusta local a structure and casually wiping his eyes after town hero Mize scored an eight-over-80.

I didn’t anticipate getting a response like that and climate like this, Mize said. Sandy’s’s decision to come out and recognize me there was very special.

” Sandy’s’s a great fighter and good friend, and to start with him is pretty cool.”
