Giuliani scorns Mamdani’s presence at 9/11 anniversary: ‘It offends me’

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani lamented current Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s presence at the Sept. 11 commemoration marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, saying the socialist mayor’s attendance would “offend him.”
Giuliani, who served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, became the public face of the city’s response to the attacks and visited the World Trade Center site multiple times on Sept. 11, with many dubbing him “America’s mayor.”

Speaking with Newsmax on Sunday, Giuliani was asked about Mamdani’s plans to attend a ceremony at ground zero on Friday.
“There’s no question he should,” Giuliani said when asked if Mamdani should skip the ceremony.
“Frankly, whatever he’d like to say, he doesn’t agree that Sept. 11 was an Islamic terrorist attack on the United States of America. One that is in terms of war or effort continuing today, and may be even worse today,” Giuliani continued. “Having lost friends there, and being very close to many of the families, it offends me that he’s coming.”
Mamdani’s plan to join families of those who died during the attacks has been met with significant pushback. A petition started by Giovanni Galante, whose wife was killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, has garnered more than 100,000 signatures since it was started in July.
The petition’s organizers cited a series of concerns about Mamdani, including his past comments on U.S. foreign policy, his response to the phrase “globalize the intifada,” appointments and political endorsements he has made for activist figures, and writings by his father on political violence, which they argue make him an inappropriate participant in the ceremony.
Giuliani, meanwhile, was more frank about his issues with Mamdani, saying the socialist is a “clear supporter” of radical Muslim ideologies.
Former New York Gov. George Pataki, a Republican, has also said Mamdani should not go to ground zero, citing the mayor’s proximity to controversial streamer Hasan Piker, who said America “deserved” 9/11.

Mamdani has denied supporting terrorism or political violence and has repeatedly condemned the Sept. 11 attacks. On Monday, he reaffirmed his plans to attend commemorative ceremonies.
“I’m proud to be the mayor of this city. I love this city. I love this country,” Mamdani said. “What I want this week to be a focus on is on the families whose loved ones were stolen from them 25 years ago in the horrific act of terror of Sept. 11 and a focus also on the first responders who did everything they could.”
