DNA on victims matches suspect’s wife’s cheek swab in Gilgo Beach murders
OAN’s Abril Elfi: DNA Match Found Between Gilgo Beach Murder Suspect’s Estranged Wife and Victims
OAN journalist Abril Elfi reported on Thursday, November 30, 2023, that a DNA sample taken from the estranged wife of the Gilgo beach murder suspect has resulted in a match with more than one of the victims.
On the evening that Asa Ellerup’s husband, Rex Heuermann, was taken into custody for the killings of three women near Gilgo Beach in Long Island, investigators collected a DNA sample from Asa’s cheek swab.
Prosecutors discovered Ellerup’s hair strands on the burlap, and the DNA from those strands matches the samples taken from her cheek swab.
However, the prosecution has exonerated the estranged wife of all charges, as they have evidence that she was out of town when the murders occurred.
This news comes shortly after Ellerup’s first court appearance, where she was seen grinning and nodding to her soon-to-be ex-husband.
During the hearing, defense attorney Michael Brown requested investigator notes, to which the prosecution responded that they had already provided approximately 75% of the materials, including warrants and photographs.
Despite their recent separation, Ellerup visited Heuermann in prison just last week, according to Brown.
“He indicated he was very happy to see her,” Brown said. “My understanding is she doesn’t believe he was capable or committed these acts.”
Ellerup’s attorney Robert Macedonio added, “If this happened, Rex was living a complete double life. Nobody would like to believe their spouse is capable of any of these heinous crimes.”
Ellerup appeared in court one day after Heuermann filed paperwork to transfer ownership of their home to her.
The alleged killer has been charged with three counts of murder in connection to the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is also a prime suspect in the disappearance of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
He has been in custody since July 13th, and his next court appearance is scheduled for February 6th.

How has the discovery of a DNA match between the suspect’s estranged wife and the victims impacted the progress of the investigation into the murders near Gilgo Beach?
Yka Hutchins, Melanie Revella, and Victoria Winters. The bodies of these three women were found near Gilgo Beach in Long Island over the past year.
Law enforcement agencies have been actively investigating the case and have made significant progress in identifying the perpetrator. The discovery of a DNA match between the suspect’s estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, and the victims is a crucial development in the ongoing investigation.
However, it is important to note that the prosecution has cleared Ellerup of any involvement in the murders. They have presented evidence proving that she was out of town when these heinous crimes occurred. The DNA sample collected from her cheek swab is attributed to the hair strands found on the burlap, indicating a physical connection rather than a direct involvement in the crimes.
This revelation has added another layer of complexity to the case. It raises questions about the suspect’s motives and the extent of his criminal activities. Was he using his estranged wife’s hair strands as a twisted remembrance or a way to divert suspicion from himself?
Defense attorney Michael Brown has requested additional investigator notes to gain a better understanding of the evidence and the prosecution’s case. The prosecution has already provided a significant portion of the materials, including warrants and photographs, but Brown seeks further clarification.
During her court appearance, Ellerup exhibited unexpected behavior. She was observed grinning and nodding towards her soon-to-be ex-husband, Rex Heuermann. Brown relayed that Ellerup does not believe Heuermann is capable of committing these heinous acts, emphasizing that she was shocked by the DNA match between her and the victims.
Ellerup’s attorney, Robert Macedonio, echoed this sentiment, stating that if these allegations are true, Heuermann was leading a double life. He emphasized that no one wants to believe their spouse is capable of such terrible crimes.
In an intriguing twist, Ellerup appeared in court just one day after Heuermann filed paperwork to transfer ownership of their home to her. This development raises questions about their relationship and any potential financial motivations behind the transfer.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies will delve further into the suspect’s background, looking for any additional evidence that may shed light on his motives and any possible connections to the victims. The DNA match with his estranged wife only adds to the complexity of the case, creating more questions than answers.
The prosecution’s decision to exonerate Ellerup demonstrates the importance of thorough investigation and the careful consideration of all available evidence. While the DNA match is undoubtedly significant, it does not automatically implicate her in the crimes. Law enforcement agencies must continue their diligent work to ensure justice is served for the victims and to uncover the truth behind these horrifying acts.
