German antitrust regulator opens door for curbs on Apple

Germany’s antitrust regulator is considering implementing measures to limit Apple’s market dominance, as it has determined Apple to be a “company of paramount significance for competition across markets”, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Andreas Mundt, the Bundeskartellamt President, stated that the regulator may target practices “that pose a threat to competition and practices and effectively prevent them” based on this determination.

Apple intends to appeal this decision and will continue working with the cartel office to understand its concerns. An Apple spokesperson noted that the regulator’s designation discounts the fierce competition Apple faces in Germany, and it overlooks the importance of Apple’s user privacy and security-centric business model.
