Georgetown SJP Solicits Letters of Support For ‘Political Prisoners’ Convicted of Funneling Millions To Hamas

Georgetown University’s students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter hosted a letter-writing event asking people to send support to several people it calls “political prisoners,” including the founders of the holy Land Foundation-Ghassan Elashi and Shukri Abu Baker-who were convicted in a federal case tied to providing material support to Hamas. The article says the group framed the letter recipients’ convictions as misguided and described the alleged “material support” as charitable “zakat,” while also encouraging writers to address the prisoners “as a comrade” and to emphasize the “justice” of their cause.

The SJP chapter also sought letters for Tarek Bazrouk and Jakhi McCray, described as radical anti-Israel activists who were convicted of violent crimes. The article characterizes Bazrouk as having attacked Jewish protesters and notes prosecutors found weapons, large cash amounts, and anti-Jewish/pro-Hamas imagery. For McCray, it cites federal arson convictions involving setting fire to NYPD vehicles and discusses the financial damage and expected prison exposure, while noting SJP rejected the plea outcome as coercive.

It further claims other campus groups have similarly honored or amplified support for people described as pro-terror “political prisoners,” citing an example from UC berkeley Law where an SJP chapter hosted a “teach-in” featuring Israa Jaabis, who was convicted of attacking an Israeli police officer and was released under a hostage deal. Georgetown is said to have not responded to a comment request, according to the article.
