Town of Wallkill Supervisor Donates⁤ Shuttle⁤ Bus to ⁤City of Middletown for $1

In a generous ⁤act of community support, Town⁤ of ⁣Wallkill supervisor George Serrano transferred the title of a 10-year-old⁣ shuttle ⁣bus ⁤to the City⁢ of⁣ Middletown ‍for‍ a symbolic⁢ $1. The official handover took place in ⁢front of the town highway department garage ‍on Sept. 28.
The bus⁤ will now be⁢ a valuable addition to the⁤ city’s senior transportation fleet, providing much-needed ‌support to⁤ the local elderly population. Julisa Sierra, ⁢the director of Mulberry House Senior ‌Center, represented Middletown in‌ receiving the title.

Currently, approximately 200 seniors‍ aged 60 and above rely on the city’s transportation service to reach ⁢doctors’ appointments, grocery stores, and the Mulberry Senior ⁢Center.
The shuttle buses‍ operate ⁢from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 ‍p.m. on weekdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday mornings⁤ for church ⁢trips. ⁤Riders are encouraged to make a‌ suggested $1 ‌donation for ‍each trip.

Approximately 70 percent of ‍the service costs are covered by grants from the ⁤Orange⁣ County government, with the remaining expenses being ⁤funded by the⁣ city, as stated by Ms. Sierra.
The Town of Wallkill’s donation of ‍the bus to Middletown came ⁢after the acquisition of two new vehicles for its own⁢ transportation⁢ system, with most of⁢ the purchase costs being‍ covered by grants.
“We are all in this together, and ⁢we all work together,” affirmed Mr. Serrano, highlighting the spirit of collaboration within the community.
The bus had been out of service for ‍a year before the generous donation.
The Town of Wallkill offers two transportation‍ services:⁤ a flexible “Dial A Ride”‍ service for individual ⁣destinations and ⁢a shuttle service with fixed routes ⁣at specific times. Mr. Serrano mentioned that the town ‌is considering expanding both services.
A fare of $3 is charged ‌per ride, with reduced fees available for seniors and‌ disabled individuals.
Last year, the town’s transportation system served approximately‍ 2,200 riders⁢ (excluding ‍repeat users).
