Yet while the national average has not changed much, fuel costs have soared on the West Coast in recent weeks. Statewide averages for gas prices in California, Oregon, and Washington have increased over the last month. Prices in those states remain much higher than the national average, with fuel costs over a $4.20 per-gallon price point in each state.
Across most of the country, gas prices are well within the $3 per gallon range. Over the last week, they have fluctuated between $3.188 and $3.203 per gallon. According to AAA, those prices are slightly more expensive than a month ago, when the national average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.13.
However, this price range for gas has been the norm for the last few months. On Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day, the national average price for gas was $3.186 per gallon. In mid-August, the average price was $3.153 per gallon. Toward the end of July, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas was $3.14, and at the beginning of July, gas was $3.171 per gallon. At the beginning of June, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.141. On the last day of April, a gallon of regular gas averaged $3.182 per gallon throughout the nation.

This summer’s gas prices were the lowest for a summer season since 2021, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Most gas price experts suggest a $3-per-gallon price point as a reasonable cost in today’s market when analyzing the affordability of nationwide gas prices. With fuel costs remaining steady the last few months and less expensive than earlier in 2025, the number of states averaging less than $3 per gallon has increased compared to 2024. However, the total number of states at this price point for gas has fluctuated over the summer.
Currently, there are 20 states with average gas prices lower than $3 per gallon, the same number as during the last week of August.
As mentioned above, gas prices in states on the West Coast have increased significantly over the last month. Different regions of the country typically have different average gas prices. The states with the most affordable gas prices are located along the Gulf of America.

California has the most expensive gas prices in the country at $4.656 per gallon. This is followed by Washington, which had the most expensive gas prices in the nation earlier this week, with a statewide average of $4.637 per gallon. Next is Hawaii at $4.486 per gallon, Oregon at $4.255, and Nevada at $3.924.
Mississippi has the cheapest gas prices in the nation on Tuesday, at $2.708 per gallon. Oklahoma is next at $2.737, followed by Louisiana at $2.763. Texas is next at $2.771 per gallon, and Tennessee with a price of $2.795.
