Gaetz to propose bill cutting funds for Trump investigation by Jack Smith.

Rep.⁣ Matt⁢ Gaetz Plans to Introduce ‍Bill⁤ to Defund Special ‍Counsel Investigation

Rep. Matt Gaetz‌ (R-FL) is taking action to defund‌ special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into⁣ former President Donald ‍Trump. In ⁣a recent episode ‌of his podcast ⁣Firebrand,⁣ Gaetz emphasized the ‍urgency⁣ of the situation, stating ‍that the House of Representatives should⁣ not wait for the‌ appropriations process‍ or the⁣ Holman rule.

Protecting⁤ Democracy and⁣ Preserving the‌ Republic

Gaetz⁤ strongly believes ⁤that the investigation⁢ poses a threat to ‌democracy and accuses those involved of engaging ⁤in election interference. He questions⁣ the purpose of preserving the ⁢republic⁤ if Congress lacks the⁢ capability to⁢ stop such interference. Gaetz emphasizes ⁢the need to operationalize our⁢ commitment‌ to protecting democracy.

Currently, Trump ‌is the subject of‍ two Department⁤ of Justice investigations.⁤ One focuses on the Capitol riot ‍that occurred on January 6, while the ‌other⁢ pertains to ‍his ⁤alleged mishandling ⁣of classified documents found‍ at his Mar-a-Lago ‌residence.

Smith’s Role in the ‍Investigation

Since ⁣his⁣ appointment by Attorney General‌ Merrick Garland in‌ November 2022, ‍Jack Smith ⁢has been leading the inquiry ⁣into Trump’s involvement⁢ in‍ the Capitol⁣ riot and any potential efforts ‍to overturn the 2020 election results.

Trump himself revealed⁤ on Truth Social‌ that ‍he received⁣ a letter from‌ Smith, notifying ⁤him that he is a target of a grand jury⁣ investigation based⁢ in‌ Washington, D.C.

Gaetz’s Efforts to‍ Defund the‌ Investigation

Gaetz’s bill aims to ⁢defund the investigation,‍ citing concerns ⁢of election interference⁤ and a lack of transparency from‍ the‍ Department of ‍Justice towards Congress. He has reached out to the attorney general, seeking information⁤ about‌ the individuals on Smith’s team.

Last month, Gaetz sent‍ a letter to⁢ Garland, requesting that the DOJ keep ‍and produce all ⁤records from Smith’s office. He demanded⁣ access to a ⁤staff and phone ‍list ‍of ‌employees assigned to Smith’s office, with‌ a deadline of July⁣ 7 for ‌the‍ documents to⁤ be provided ⁤to Congress. Gaetz claims that the⁤ DOJ has been unresponsive to ⁢his ‌requests.

Gaetz emphasizes the power of the purse, ‌stating ‍that it ‍should be ⁢wielded consistently to achieve victory for‍ the American people and put ⁢an end to the investigation.
