Gabriel Amo triumphs in Democratic primary for Cicilline’s RI House seat.

Gabriel ‌Amo ⁤Wins Democratic Primary for Rhode Island House Seat

Gabriel Amo emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for the House seat previously ⁤held by ex-Rep. David Cicilline. The Associated Press declared Amo the winner less than an hour after the polls closed on Tuesday‍ evening. Amo, a Democrat, is now set to ⁤face Republican Gerry Leonard in the ⁤general election on November 7. However, with Rhode ⁢Island’s 1st Congressional District leaning heavily⁤ Democratic, Amo is‌ considered the frontrunner.

A Diverse Background and Impressive Resume

Amo, the son of Ghanaian and Liberian immigrants, brings‌ a wealth‌ of‌ experience to the table. He served as deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and as a⁤ special assistant to ‍President Joe Biden. In these roles, ⁣he acted ⁤as a liaison to local‌ governments and worked ‌closely with governors⁣ and state elected officials during the⁤ Obama administration. Amo’s credentials earned him endorsements from influential figures such as⁣ Ron Klain, ⁣Biden’s former chief of ‌staff,⁤ and former⁤ Rep. Patrick Kennedy.

Notable Challengers in ⁢the Primary

The primary ‌race also featured two other ‌prominent candidates who ⁣garnered significant‍ attention. Former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg⁤ positioned himself as the⁤ progressive choice, ⁣receiving ‍endorsements⁣ from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, the first Dominican American elected ⁤to statewide ‌office, enjoyed the support of the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

A Competitive Field Narrows Down

Although 20 candidates initially ⁢entered the⁤ Democratic primary, only 12 made it onto the ballot. One contender,⁢ Don Carlson, suspended his campaign after allegations of inappropriate behavior surfaced. Ultimately, Amo emerged as ⁤the⁣ clear winner, ⁢securing his place as the Democratic⁢ nominee.

Former Rep. ⁢David Cicilline, who served in Congress for seven terms, stepped down from ‍his⁢ seat in ⁢June to lead the Rhode Island Foundation. ⁢Cicilline’s departure paved the way for this⁢ closely watched primary race. ⁣Reflecting on his time‍ in office,⁢ Cicilline expressed gratitude for the opportunity to ‍serve his ⁤constituents and highlighted his ⁢new role as an‍ opportunity to make a‌ meaningful impact on the lives of Rhode Island residents.
