The Federal Trade Commission Investigates ChatGPT for Publishing False Information
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is currently conducting an investigation into ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence app developed by OpenAI. The FTC has received allegations that ChatGPT has been harming consumers by disseminating false information.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, recently received a 20-page letter from the FTC, demanding extensive records related to the allegations. The letter, sent on Thursday, gave OpenAI a 14-day deadline to comply with the request. Additionally, the FTC instructed the company not to alter or destroy any documents in its possession.
“Accordingly, You must suspend any routine procedures for Document destruction and take other measures to prevent the destruction of Documents in Your possession, custody, or control that are in any way relevant to this investigation,” the letter reads.
The FTC’s request for documents dates back to June 1, 2020. This investigation follows similar actions taken by the FTC against other tech giants such as Meta, Amazon, and Twitter, who have been accused of violating consumer protection laws.
OpenAI has received multiple complaints regarding ChatGPT providing false and defamatory information about individuals, including referencing non-existent news articles. As part of the investigation, the FTC is also demanding that OpenAI disclose how it addresses the issue of ChatGPT generating fabricated information when faced with questions it cannot answer.
The primary concern of the FTC revolves around the alleged publication of potentially damaging false information about individuals. The document sent to OpenAI specifically asks about the measures being taken to mitigate the problem of disseminating false personal information.
This investigation marks a significant regulatory step in relation to ChatGPT, as lawmakers grapple with establishing a regulatory framework for this emerging technology.
