Rioters in France Attack Mayor’s Home in Violent Incident
In a shocking act of violence, rioters in France drove a car into the home of a suburban mayor and set it on fire while his wife and two daughters were inside, asleep. The incident occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning, as the country continues to grapple with ongoing riots.
Attack on Mayor’s Home
- Vincent Jeanbrun, the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses, a south Paris suburb, was not present at his home when the rioters attacked. However, his wife and two young children were chased out by the mob, as reported by The Telegraph. The local prosecutor has described the attack on the mayor’s home and family as an “assassination attempt.” These riots were triggered by the police shooting of a 17-year-old Algerian Muslim.
Mayor’s Response
- Expressing his shock and outrage, Vincent Jeanbrun stated, “Last night marked a milestone in horror and disgrace. My wife and one of my children were injured. It was an attempted murder of unspeakable cowardice,” as reported by Daily Mail.
Violent Attack on Family
- According to reports, the rioters pursued Vincent Jeanbrun’s wife, Melanie Nowak, and their two children, aged 5 and 7, into the backyard while shooting mortar fireworks at them. Eventually, Nowak managed to get her children over a wall and into their neighbor’s yard, but she suffered a fractured leg during the escape, and one of her children was also injured. Nowak is currently recovering in the hospital.
Government Response
- France’s Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, has vowed to bring justice for the victims of this “cowardly and terrible attack.” An investigation into attempted murder has been launched, as authorities found a plastic bottle containing fire accelerant at the scene. Darmanin tweeted, “The perpetrators of these acts will answer for their heinous crimes.”
Widespread Riots
- Over the weekend, riots spread across various cities in France, including Paris, Roubaix, Marseille, Reims, and Lyon. Numerous buses were burned, store windows were smashed, and significant landmarks, such as a shopping mall and the country’s largest library, were set on fire. Despite deploying 45,000 police officers, more than 800 fires were reported throughout the night, as stated by the BBC.
Call for State of Emergency
- Vincent Jeanbrun has urged the French government to declare a state of emergency, granting authorities greater power to arrest suspects and implement curfews. However, President Emmanuel Macron has thus far declined to take this step, as reported by Le Monde.
