The current front-runner for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, Hong has leaned into populist messaging about the cost of living throughout her campaign and is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Hong furthered her affiliation with the Democratic Party’s left-wing by inviting Piker, an internet personality known for promoting an anti-Israel and communist platform, to speak at the event.

Some attendees rose to deliver a standing ovation for Piker, who spoke about how Wisconsin served as the home of the American socialist movement long before modern figures popularized it, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The crowd at the South Milwaukee High School gymnasium skewed young, according to the outlet, and Piker livestreamed and posted about the rally throughout the day on social media.
“Not only are we going to run up the numbers for Francesca Hong on Aug. 11, but we are going to take that victory to the general election to make sure that the Republican Tom Tiffany never gets a seat of power ever again!” Piker said at the rally. “It seems like Wisconsin is making its choice. And it’s not me, it’s all of us.”
Hong’s main Democratic opponent, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, has criticized Hong for associating with Piker, while Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) said Hong’s decision to campaign with Piker “is certainly a choice.”
When asked by a reporter if it’s a risk to campaign with such a controversial figure, Hong said “it would be a risk not to try to build the broadest coalition possible.”
Piker has long been a Democratic figurehead, but he rose to prominence in recent months as an outspoken supporter of socialist congressional candidates, often going viral for making inflammatory statements about Jews and sympathizing with anti-Western ideals. He has also campaigned with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul el Sayed and spoke at Yale University in the spring. Piker most recently made headlines for wearing a Mao-styled suit at a national convention.
FRANCESCA HONG LEANS INTO SOCIALIST RECORD IN WISCONSIN GUBERNATORIAL RACE
The winner of the Aug. 11 primary election will face off against Tiffany, a member of the House Freedom Caucus. Hong’s path to victory was further cleared this week when competitor Mandela Barnes, the former lieutenant governor of Wisconsin, dropped out of the race and implicitly endorsed Hong.
A Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday shows Hong leading the Democratic field by slightly over 20 percentage points. She represents Wisconsin’s 76th district, which covers some of Madison, and has highlighted her background as a chef and former restaurant owner throughout her campaign.
