Former Vice President Calls for Biden to Meet With House Speaker for Debt Ceiling Talks

Former Vice President Mike Pence is not holding back in his criticism of President Joe Biden’s handling of the lapsed debt ceiling talks. In fact, he’s calling it “unconscionable” that the president won’t even meet with House Republicans to negotiate.

Pence is not alone in his concerns. With the looming deadline approaching, the Democrats and House Republicans are deadlocked in a dispute over whether to raise the debt ceiling. If they fail to do so, the U.S. government could risk default by June, which would have a devastating impact on the global economy.

While some moderate Democrat legislators have pushed Biden to negotiate with Speaker McCarthy, the rest have refused to accept Republican budget cuts in exchange for preventing a default.

White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients has made it clear that the Biden administration will not negotiate with the GOP-controlled House over its debt ceiling spending cut proposal. However, McCarthy announced a legislative framework last week that would raise the debt limit for a year.

It’s a frustrating situation, and Pence is not afraid to call out Biden’s hypocrisy. “It was about a decade ago, when [Biden] was vice president when he boasted about how closely he worked with House Republicans to negotiate an agreement,” Pence said. “Now he’s sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office and saying ‘I won’t even talk about it.'”

Will the White House and House Republicans Reach a Compromise?

It remains to be seen whether the White House and House Republicans will be able to reach a compromise before the deadline. But one thing is for sure: the stakes are high, and the world is watching.
