Former US Senator John Warner Dead At 94

Former Republican Virginia Sen. John Warner passed away at the age of 94 on Tuesday at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The former Navy secretary and Republican senator was married to actress Elizabeth Taylor, who died on Mar. 23, 2011.  Warner passed away due to heart failure with his wife and daughter by his side, the AP reported.

Born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Washington D.C., and joining the Navy at 17-years-old Warner worked as a 3rd class electronics technician while in the Navy, continuing on to receive his engineering degree from Washington and Lee University in 1949.

Elected to the Senate in 1978 and serving just five terms, Warner garnered a lot of attention from his marriage to the notable Taylor, after previously meeting her on a blind date in 1976 at a dinner with Queen Elizabeth of England, according to the AP.

Warner, who retired from the Senate after 30 years and served as the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee for a period of time, was also a huge supporter of former President George W. Bush, and even defended the Bush Administration over their handling of the Iraq War.

“This country has lost a great patriot,” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said. “In Congress, we all knew him as a voice of courage, conviction and comity; a leader unafraid to speak the truth but always committed to finding common ground and consensus.”
