Former Star Linebacker Willie McGinest Releases Statement After Felony Arrest For Assault With Deadly Weapon: Report
Former New England Patriots star linebacker Willie McGinest released a statement Friday after being arrested on felony charges for allegedly assaulting someone with a deadly weapon.
The arrest stemmed from an incident that happened earlier this month at a nightclub in West Hollywood, according to a video that was released by TMZ.
The video shows McGinest, and several men he was with, walking up to a man who was sitting in a booth before they begin to strike him repeatedly.
The report said that during the alleged assault, McGinest, who now works at NFL Network, “appeared to pick up a bottle … and then slam it into the man’s head repeatedly” before later tossing the bottle onto a couch. The NFL Network released a statement explaining that McGinest would not appear on the network while the investigation was ongoing.
McGinest was arrested for the December 9 incident this week, after he voluntarily turned himself into the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, on one charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He was released on a $30,000 bond.

“First and foremost, I want to offer my deepest apology for my lapse in judgment and behavior on December 9 at a restaurant in West Hollywood,” he said in a statement. “To my family, community, friends, and youth I mentor, please know I feel horrible for my actions and take full responsibility.”
“To my colleagues at the NFL Network and those I work closely with as an advisor to professional and community-based organizations, please know I am embarrassed and regret what occurred,” he continued. “Most of all, I am disappointed in myself, as I know this is an isolated incident and is not reflective of my faith, role as a father, life’s body of work, or the role model I’ve worked hard to become. It is personally devastating that decades of community service, youth engagement, mentoring, and professional development would become an afterthought in a single moment that should have never happened.”
“This incident has prompted me to deep self-reflection – mind, soul, and spirit,” the statement concluded. “I know that violence is never the answer to such situations, no matter how intense the provocation. Rest assured, I will take whatever steps necessary to restore the public trust, mend damaged relationships, and ensure this never happens again.”
