Former MLB player Mark Teixeira launches campaign for Chip Roy’s seat
World Series champion Mark Teixeira announced his congressional campaign Thursday for Rep. Chip Roy’s (R-TX) seat.
“As a proud Texan and lifelong conservative who loves our country, I’m ready to fight for the principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional,” Teixeira said in a statement.
“It takes the principles that make Texas and America exceptional,” Teixeira said. “It takes teamwork to win – I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”
Teixeira was the fifth overall MLB draft pick in 2001 and was drafted by the Texas Rangers. He later played for the New York Yankees and won the World Series in 2009. Since retiring from baseball, Teixeira has lived in central Texas with his wife and three children.
As of Wednesday, Teixiera is the sole Republican candidate in the race for Texas’s 21st congressional seat.
Roy is retiring from Congress to run for Attorney General. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has endorsed Roy over his own former chief of staff, Aaron Reitz, who is also running for the position and launched his campaign before Roy. Cruz also had Roy as his chief of staff before Reitz.

Meanwhile, current Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leaving his position for a senatorial bid against Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), endorsed Reitz.
