Ex-Arkansas Congressman Marion Berry dies at 80 after 7 terms.

Former Arkansas Congressman and Advocate for Farmers and Elderly Dies at 80

Former U.S. Rep. Robert Marion Berry, known as “Marion,” passed away at the age of 80. Berry served seven terms in Congress and was a passionate advocate for farmers and elderly residents. He was also known for his blunt rhetoric and folksy manner.

Life in Service to Others

Berry’s son, Mitch, described his father as having a “signature quick wit and way with words” and living his life in service to others. Berry believed that the role of government was to help people, and he took that charge seriously. He was generous with his time and talents, mentoring dozens of individuals throughout his life.

Advocacy for Rural District

Berry was elected to Congress in 1996 and represented the 1st District in eastern Arkansas. He focused on issues that impacted his notably poor district, including agriculture. Berry was a licensed pharmacist and farmer himself, and he aggressively pushed for an end to the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba, which could have boosted exports of soybeans, rice, and cotton.

Unapologetic Quips

Berry was known for his verbal takedowns of his political enemies, on both sides of the aisle. He once referred to a Texas Republican congressman on the House floor as a “Howdy-Doody-looking nimrod.” Berry was unapologetic about his quips, saying they reflected his passion for representing his district. He criticized anyone “when I think they are making a serious policy mistake.”

Legacy and Survivors

Berry retired from Congress in 2010 for health reasons after serving for 14 years. He underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2011. Berry is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Carolyn, a daughter, a son, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held on June 24 at the Gillett Methodist Church in Gillett, Arkansas.
