Front-row Tickets from Ford’s Theatre Performance Where Abraham Lincoln Was Shot Sell for Over $250,000
Front-row tickets from the historic Ford’s Theatre performance, where former President Abraham Lincoln was tragically shot, have been sold at auction for an astonishing price of over $250,000. This remarkable sale took place during Boston-based RR Auction’s Remarkable Rarities event, surpassing the initial estimate of $100,000 and surprising many.
The identity of the lucky winner remains a mystery, as they have chosen to remain anonymous, as reported.
On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot while attending a performance of the acclaimed play “Our American Cousin,” featuring the renowned stage actor and Southern sympathizer, John Wilkes Booth. The president tragically passed away the following day in a house located just across the street.
The sold tickets bear the stamp of “Ford’s Theatre, APR 14, 1865, This Night Only,” according to a spokesperson from PR Auction. Additionally, they are clipped, indicating that the original ticket holders had presented them for admission.
“We firmly believe that there is no other 19th-century event as significant to ticket collectors as the performance of ‘Our American Cousin’ on April 14, 1865,” expressed RR Auction Executive Vice President Bobby Livingston. He further emphasized that those who possessed these tickets on that fateful night would have had a direct view of Lincoln’s box.
Livingston passionately stated, “This pair of front-row Ford’s Theatre tickets, which were facing Lincoln’s box, allowed the original theatergoers to witness America’s most tragic performance.”
According to the report, the only other known surviving tickets from this historic performance are currently held by Harvard University’s Houghton Library.
