Football Legend John Madden Returns to ‘Madden NFL 23’ Cover, And More

Late football legend John Madden has returned to the franchise with the “Madden NFL 23” video game; he will be featured on the cover and more for the first time in 20 years following his death last year.

The broadcasting legend and former NFL head coach passed away in December at the age of 85. In honor of the person who influenced the creation of the popular football video game, the upcoming “Madden NFL 23” features a cover that reads “All Madden Edition” and includes a picture of the late coach busting through a poster while holding a football, ProFootball Sports.com reported in a piece published Wednesday.

The official trailer drops on Thursday, and can be seen here.

EA Sports is promising fans of the game, which features professional football players, more than just Madden on the cover, including that players will see Madden himself every single time they turn on the game and learn more about the coach who helped create the game, the outlet noted. Game fans will even get to hear Coach Madden’s voice thanks to the help of “remastered audio clips that call back to his legendary days as a broadcaster,” according to EA Sports.

The founder of EA Sports, Trip Hawkins, pitched the idea of a video game franchise centered around Madden in 1984, ESPN reported. The first Madden edition was released on June 1, 1988.

After news about Madden’s death, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell offered his condolences on “behalf of the entire NFL family” to “Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families,” as The Daily Wire previously reported.

“We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather,” Goodell shared.

“Nobody loved football more than Coach,” the statement added. “He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”
