Florida Senior Community Removes All Gators Living In Its Ponds After 85-Year-Old Woman Killed
An 85-year-old woman died after being bitten by an alligator in her retirement community. The community is currently trying to eradicate all the alligators that may be living in its ponds.
Gloria Serge was Walking The incident took place at Spanish Lakes Fairways’ community retention pond on Monday, around noon.
According to local media, the 10 foot alligator weighed 700 pounds and surged out of water to grab her dog. Serge tried to fight the alligator, but was eventually knocked down. The alligator grabbed Serge’s foot and dragged him into the water.
Video Released This video showed the moment when the incident occurred. The video doesn’t show the alligator attacking the woman.
TMZ reported Friday, that residents of the community said that state officials visited their backyard Thursday to inform them that they were removing alligators from the community’s ponds.
Robert Lilly, an expert who traps alligators, stated that officials had difficulty recovering the body of the woman and removing the animal from the pond.
“It was definitely a fight. [We] snagged him on the bottom. He never surfaced,” Lilly stated. “He stayed down the whole time. We were able to get a second hook in him and a hard line in him so we could get him up.”
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, alligators remain on the federal endangered species listing but can still be found throughout the state.

“Alligators occur in all 67 counties in Florida and can be found in practically all fresh and brackish water bodies and occasionally in salt water,” According to the state agency. “Although exact population figures are not known, Florida has a healthy and stable population of about 1.3 million alligators of every size. This population estimate is based on an estimated 6.7 million acres of suitable habitat.”
