DeSantis: Florida rescues 700+ Americans from Haiti
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida declared the successful rescue of 722 U.S. citizens from Haiti amidst rising tensions. This rescue operation, initiated by the Florida Division of Emergency Management on March 20, guarantees access to essential resources like food, water, and medical care for the evacuees. Despite federal obstacles, DeSantis emphasized Florida’s commitment to aiding Americans in distress.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) announced Wednesday that Florida has rescued over 700 United States residents from Haiti, which has become increasingly hostile.
The 722 rescues come a little more than a month since Florida’s Division of Emergency Management began its operations on March 20. The division will ensure that those rescued will have access to the resources they need, including food, water, medical treatment, and transportation home.
“The State of Florida doesn’t shy away from doing the right thing and helping Americans in need,” DeSantis said in a press release. “I’m proud to announce that despite the lack of cooperation from the federal government, more than 700 Americans have been successfully evacuated from Haiti to Florida.”

The Florida governor is not the only politician who has been active in rescuing people from Haiti, as Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) has conducted two rescue missions to the country himself. Mills, a U.S. Army combat veteran, rescued 13 people during his second mission.

Last month, the Haitian government declared a state of emergency following a weekend of extreme violence, which included the storming of the country’s two biggest prisons. Nearly 4,000 inmates escaped one prison, and another containing 1,400 prisoners was also overrun.
The prison escape resulted in “massive population displacements and consisting in particular of kidnappings and assassinations of peaceful citizens, violence against women and children, ransacking and theft of public and private property,” according to the government.
