Florida city school board votes against LGBT History Month

Florida
school board has voted down recognizing October as
LGBTQ History
Month.
In an 8-1 vote, the
Miami-Dade School Board
decided against the measure that would have included teaching 12th graders about two Supreme Court cases that recognize same-sex marriage and offer protections for LGBT employees.
Board member Lucia Baez-Geller, who brought the measure before the board Wednesday and was the lone vote in favor of it, called the vote results “shocking and sad.”

“The 8 to 1 vote against the recognition of LGBTQ History Month is both shocking and sad for our community, and especially difficult for our LGBTQ students, parents, and teachers,” Baez-Geller
said
in a statement. “I am confident that the vast majority of our community members reject the anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and the politics of division.”

”We will continue to advocate for our students, support our marginalized populations, and create a safe space for each and every student across our district,” she said.
During the meeting Wednesday, parents, teachers, and students spoke regarding the measure for more than three hours.
Patricia Moore spoke against the measure and was
reportedly
applauded when saying that schools “are not here to indoctrinate with the LGBTQ agenda. We should not expose our children to this in school.”
Michael Rajner spoke in favor of the measure, however, noting his experience being gay included having parents who told him not to tell others.
“Our struggle is real. Our struggle is history,” Rajner said.
Vice Chairman Steve Gallon III, who last year voted in favor of recognizing October as LGBTQ Month, said the measure this year “did not fully comport with the law,” referencing Florida’s recently passed
Parental Rights in Education law
that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed in March.
Attorney Walter Harvey disagreed and told the school board that because the measure did not make changes to curriculum or instruction, he believed it was in compliance with the state law.
