Florida’s attorney general is investigating the snub of Florida State University from the College Football Playoff
Florida Attorney General Investigating College Football Playoff Committee’s Decision to Exclude Florida State Seminoles
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has announced a captivating investigation into the College Football Playoff committee’s controversial decision to leave out the undefeated Florida State Seminoles from the four-team championship. Despite finishing the season with a flawless 13-0 record and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference, a Power Five conference, the committee opted for the 12-1 Texas Longhorns and 12-1 Alabama Crimson Tide instead.
Moody, an alumnus of the University of Florida and a rival to FSU, passionately labeled the decision as an ”injustice” and vowed to scrutinize any potential ”anticompetitive conduct” by the playoff committee. “I’m a lifelong Gator, but I’m also the Florida Attorney General, and I know injustice when I see it,” Moody stated. She emphasized that the NCAA, conferences, and the College Football Playoff Committee are subject to antitrust laws.

“No rational person or college football fan can look at this situation and not question the result,” Moody asserted. “My Office is launching an investigation to examine if the Committee was involved in any anticompetitive conduct. As it stands, the Committee’s decision reeks of partiality, so we are demanding answers — not only for FSU, but for all schools, teams, and fans of college football. In Florida, merit matters. If it’s attention they were looking for, the Committee certainly has our attention now.”
Moody has taken action by sending a Civil Investigative Demand to the committee, requesting various communications related to the deliberations from entities such as the SEC, ACC, NCAA, ESPN, Group of Five conferences, and Power Five conferences. She has also sought information about the final vote, including the tallies of the committee members.
The investigation follows the outrage expressed by several Florida politicians regarding FSU’s exclusion from the playoff. However, this controversy will soon be a thing of the past, as a 12-team playoff with a set formula granting automatic bids to the top four conference champions is set to be implemented in 2024. Since its inception in 2014, the four-team playoff has been marred by numerous contentious selections.
Florida State will face off against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.

How does the lack of transparency in the committee’s decision-making process undermine the credibility of the college football playoff system
Of Florida and a former judge on the Florida Supreme Court, has expressed her concerns over the committee’s decision, stating that it raises questions about transparency and fairness in the college football playoff system. In a statement released by her office, Moody declared, “The exclusion of the Florida State Seminoles from the College Football Playoff raises serious concerns about the committee’s decision-making process. The committee owes it to the fans, the players, and the universities involved to provide an explanation for this controversial decision.”
The Florida State Seminoles had an impressive season, topping their conference and winning all their games with exceptional skill and determination. Their exclusion from the playoff has left many fans and experts baffled, as their record surpasses that of both the Texas Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The decision seems to go against the core principles of fair competition and excellence that the playoff system is supposed to represent.
Many argue that the committee’s decision lacks transparency. The selection process has always been somewhat mysterious, with the committee using a combination of subjective rankings and objective metrics to determine the four teams that will compete for the championship. This lack of transparency has left room for skepticism and criticism, as there is no clear understanding of how the committee arrived at their decision. Moody’s investigation aims to shed light on this process and ensure that future playoff decisions are made with greater accountability and clarity.
The controversy surrounding the committee’s decision is not limited to Florida. Fans across the country, including those of other teams that may have been considered for the playoff, are questioning the integrity of the system. The Florida State Seminoles’ exclusion undermines the credibility of the playoff, raising doubts about the committee’s ability to make fair and impartial decisions. The investigation by the Florida Attorney General is therefore seen as an opportunity for the college football community as a whole to assess and improve the playoff system.
While it is unclear what the outcome of the investigation will be, Moody’s efforts to scrutinize the process and hold the committee accountable are commendable. The college football playoff system has become a lucrative enterprise, generating millions of dollars in revenue and capturing the attention of millions of fans. It is crucial that the decision-making process behind this system is fair, transparent, and able to withstand scrutiny.
The Florida Attorney General’s investigation serves as a reminder that college football is more than just a game; it is a multi-billion dollar industry that impacts the lives of countless student-athletes, coaches, and fans. It is imperative that decisions regarding the playoff are made in a manner that upholds the principles of fairness and integrity. Moody’s investigation takes us one step closer to achieving this goal and ensuring that the college football playoff truly represents the best teams in the country.
