Violent videos have emerged from a Russian prison showing evidence of alleged planned torture and rape. On Wednesday, Russian authorities said they fired five senior prison officials amid investigations into a prison just southeast of Moscow.

Authorities said a prisoner rights group was behind exposing the video evidence of the crimes, including a massive leak of documents and photos to a website. The founder of the group’s website said abuses are taking place in many different parts of the country and authorities are hiding the truth.

“At first, it was hard to believe when we first saw all the depth of what was happening because we might guess how it works, but that it works in such cynical, methodical and prudent ways under control of the prison administration, with all workers knowing, covering and storing videos taken on work dashboard cameras. It’s unbelievable,” said Vladimir Osechkin.

Russia’s laws state inmates can’t be treated in a harsh manner and if a prison official abuses his position, he could be imprisoned for up to a decade.
