First Lady Labels Nikki Haley’s Call for Mental Competency Test for Politicians Over 75 ‘Ridiculous’
First Lady Jill Biden attacked as “ridiculous” GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley calls for mandatory mental competency testing for politicians over 75 years old.
Biden gave this response during a CNN interview. It was partially broadcast on March 2, before it was preempted by the Alex Murdaugh murder trial verdict.
Jill Biden refused to answer the question of President Joe Biden at 80 years old, when asked if he would agree to such a test.
“I mean, we haven’t even discussed [it],” She spoke. “We would never even discuss something like that.”
The Epoch Times asked the Haley campaign for her reaction to the comments of First Lady Elizabeth.
Although the president has not yet announced his reelection campaign, he is expected to soon.
Haley, 51, made a pledge to conduct mental competency tests on politicians over 75 years old in her February 15 speech.
“In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire,” Haley. “We’ll have term limits for Congress. And mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old.”
“America is not past our prime,” She added. “It’s just that our politicians are past theirs.”
Jill Biden doesn’t have to be the only person who criticizes Haley’s call.
Participating on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Bernie Sanders, an 81-year old who ran for the White House in 2016, and 2020, called Haley’s vow “absurd.”
“We are fighting racism, we’re fighting sexism, we’re fighting homophobia, I think we should also be fighting ageism. Trust people, look at people and say, you know, this person is competent, this person is not competent,” He concluded. “There are a lot of 40-year-olds out there who ain’t particularly competent. Older people, you know, you look at the individual, I don’t think you make a blanket statement.”
Sanders observed that one should evaluate the work of those in office based on their achievements, and not their age.
“Look at what they do, what they believe in. What are they fighting for?” He stated. “What does Donald Trump stand for? Do you believe in that? Well, I certainly don’t. What does Joe Biden stand for? What is he doing? Has he accomplished—look at him in that way, not on age.”
Haley was a Trump aide. Sanders fired back at Haley, who was Ambassador to the United Nations.
“Exactly what a career politician and socialist would say,” she told The Epoch Times, February 20, 2008. “This is about transparency. The Washington establishment is afraid of the people finding out some of our leaders aren’t fit to serve.”
Haley, who was governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, has been a strong supporter of former president Trump. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.). DeSantis is not yet announcing his candidacy, but it is widely believed that he will.
Haley reiterated the pledge and extended it to cover judges at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), March 3. She said that she would not mind seeing the age requirement lowered.
“Every politician and judge over 75 years old should take a competency test,” She spoke. “If you want to start at age 50, I’m good with that too.”
