President Donald Trump authorized the execution of Hasan, the soldier convicted in the deadly 2009 shooting, by an Army firing squad following War Secretary Pete Hegseth‘s request, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Monday.
“Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan, the jihadist who opened fire on unarmed American soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. He killed 13 people and wounded 32 others while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack,” Parnell posted on X. “The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution. Judgement day for Hasan has finally come.”
Hasan was convicted of carrying out the attack, which killed 14 people at the Texas military base, including an unborn baby, before a military jury and was sentenced to death in 2013. (Hasan was tried and convicted on 13 counts of murder.) He will be the first soldier executed after a court-martial since Pvt. John Bennett, who was hanged for the rape and attempted murder of a child, in 1961.
WASHINGTON RESIDENT ARRESTED OVER ALLEGED TIES TO DEADLY CANADIAN SCHOOL SHOOTING
Hasan, who is imprisoned at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, lost his final appeal to remove his death sentence in early 2025.
The former Army major and psychiatrist said he committed the shootings because he viewed soldiers as “going against the Islamic Empire.”
