Fire at Mexico migrant facility kills 39
According to Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM), 39 foreign migrants died in a fire at a detention center in Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua on Monday.
Twenty-nine other migrants were injured in the fire, some are in critical to serious conditions, according to the National Immigration Institute.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that protesting migrants had set fire to mattresses, leading to the tragic event at the northern Mexico detention center near the United State border.
“They never imagined that this would cause this terrible misfortune,” López Obrador said.
Law enforcement, ambulances, firefighters, and vans from the morgue were among those responding to the tragedy. Rows of bodies were seen laid out outside the detention center under shimmery silver sheets.
INM has reported that the facility housed 68 men from Central and South America.
Some of the injured migrants have been transferred to four local hospitals for treatment.
An investigation has been initiated into the occurrence, and the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) of Mexico has been given permission to participate in court procedures to protect international migrants. The INM stated that it will assist in legal inquiries “to clarify these unfortunate facts.”
The fire broke out on the same day as dual border hearings scheduled on Capitol Hill.
