Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman was discharged from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday after being hospitalized for over a month and a half due to depression.

Before his admittance to the hospital, staffers said that Fetterman had not displayed his usual level of energy, had been disinterested in his typical everyday activities, and was withdrawn. Fetterman had a stroke in May 2022 during his campaign, which resulted in “auditory processing disorder,” in which his doctors stated that he had “no work restrictions” and was fully capable of performing his senatorial duties. The Democrat had been known to use close captioning after his stroke while performing his duties due to his limited auditory processing capacity.

Despite his hospitalization, Fetterman kept in touch with his staff and was aware of daily in-person briefings. During this time, he also issued statements and sponsored legislation. Unfortunately, Fetterman missed 53 out of 64 Senate roll calls due to his ongoing hospitalization. However, he has since been released from his treatment after being in remission, according to his office statement, and has returned to Braddock, Pennsylvania.

“I am so happy to be home. I’m excited to be the father and husband I want to be and the senator Pennsylvania deserves. Pennsylvanians have always had my back, and I will always have theirs,” said Fetterman. “I am extremely grateful to the incredible team at Walter Reed. The care they provided changed my life. I will have more to say about this soon, but for now, I want everyone to know that depression is treatable, and treatment works. This isn’t about politics — right now there are people who are suffering from depression in red counties and blue counties. If you need help, please get help.”

The senator is expected to return to his senatorial duties on April 17th.
