On April 5, Revolution Farms voluntarily recalled several lettuce-based products distributed under its brand name, due to the discovery of Listeria. Just two days later, the Michigan-based produce manufacturer expanded its recall to include all products sold under the Revolution Farms brand. The recalled products were sold to retailers and food service distributors across six states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. The affected items from Revolution Farms include romaine lettuce sold in whole head, plastic tray, and bag form, spring mix products, and several salad kits, like the brand’s Zesty Southwest, Sesame Ginger Crunch, and Crisp Kale Caesar kits. In conjunction with Revolution Farms, Meijer also announced on April 7 that it would be voluntarily recalling select “Fresh From Meijer” premade salads due to their possible contamination by the same produce manufacturer. Affected products include various Fresh From Meijer premade salads such as Tomato Caprese Salads, Cobb Salads, Chicken Caesar Salads, and Chicken BLT Salads.

The produce problems do not end there, as on April 7, Fresh Express Incorporated also voluntarily recalled some of its salad-based offerings due to potential health risks from Listeria. The recall impacts a limited quantity of three varieties of already-expired branded and private label salad kit products produced in Morrow, Georgia. This includes certain Fresh Express Caesar Chopped Kits, Chopped Chipotle Cheddar Kits, and some Publix-brand Makoto Honey Ginger Salad Kits that were distributed to Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, as well as Virginia.

Listeriosis is a serious disease caused by consuming food that has been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Its symptoms may vary depending on the severity of your illness, with mild cases likely to exhibit fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea within a few hours to two or three days after eating contaminated food. More severe forms of the infection can take anywhere from three days to three months to develop and can cause headaches, stiff necks, confusion, loss of balance, and, in some cases, convulsions. Certain individuals, such as young children, elderly people, and pregnant women, are more vulnerable to this condition.

The recalled products have already been taken off store shelves, and the FDA advised consumers who bought them to discard them or return the products to their place of purchase for a full refund.
