FDA Announces Recall of Lay’s Potato Chips Over Health Concerns

The snack company is pulling one of its most popular products.

Back in January, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers about a recall on all flavors of Avery’s Savory Gourmet Popcorn products. Then in March, the agency alerted us again to potential Listeria contamination for Clio Snacks’ Strawberry Granola & Greek Yogurt Parfait Bar. And now, another popular snack is being pulled from shelves over health concerns. Read on to find out why Lay’s Potato Chips are currently facing a recall.

Shutterstock If potato chips are your go-to snack, you’ll want to look twice at the packaging. In a May 4 press release, the FDA announced that Frito-Lay has issued a voluntary recall on some of its Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. According to the agency, two sizes of the snack are impacted: the 13-ounce Lay’s Classic Party Size Potato Chips and the 15 and 5/8-ounce Lay’s Classic Mix and Match Potato Chips. Both packages will have a “guaranteed fresh” date of July 18, 2023, and at least one of eight different manufacturing codes that start with the number 105.

iStock There’s a good chance you may have avoided picking up one of the recalled products. The FDA indicated that Frito-Lay has only issued its recall on a “limited number” of its Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. A total of 146 bags are affected, according to the alert.

“The products were distributed to grocery, club and convenience stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and consumers would have been able to purchase them as early as April 16, 2023,” the agency added. “No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled.”

Shutterstock Frito-Lay is issuing an “allergy alert” alongside this recall, as the affected chips may contain undeclared milk. According to the FDA, an investigation was launched after a consumer complaint was issued. As a result, it was discovered that the now-recalled Lay’s Classic Potato Chips may be contaminated with undeclared milk ingredients from the company’s sour cream and onion potato chips.

“Of the major food allergens, milk represents the most common cause of recalls due to undeclared allergens,” the FDA warns on its website. “The five food types most often involved in food allergen recalls were bakery products, snack foods, candy, dairy products, and dressings (such as salad dressings, sauces, and gravies).”

iStock No allergic reactions from the recalled Lay’s Potato Chips have been reported yet. But the undeclared allergen could still have serious consequences for some consumers. “Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume product contained inside the recalled bags,” the FDA warned.

As a result, people are being urged to check their chips. “If consumers have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, they are encouraged not to consume the product and discard it immediately,” the agency added.
