FBI investigating antifa’s apparatus, sources say

The FBI is actively investigating antifa’s leadership, funding sources, and operational cells in the United States, according to sources cited by the Washington Examiner. This investigation intensified after a White House roundtable on antifa, where investigative journalists and other attendees briefed President Donald Trump about the institution’s structure, recruitment tactics, and protest activities. FBI agents have been contacting journalists and influencers who have reported extensively on or been targeted by antifa groups to gather intelligence.

The inquiry aims to understand antifa’s hierarchy, financial backers, and methods of organizing protests, including the use of online crowdfunding and the distribution of materials to activists. Conservative figures like Nick Sortor and Glenn Beck have confirmed interactions with the FBI concerning the investigation, with Beck revealing a lengthy discussion with agents about antifa’s network and financial connections to nonprofit organizations linked to prominent financiers such as George Soros.

In september, President Trump officially designated antifa as a domestic terrorist organization and authorized federal agencies to disrupt and dismantle its illegal operations using law enforcement tactics similar to those used against organized crime. The FBI’s investigation represents a concerted federal effort to address what the administration describes as a threat posed by far-left domestic terrorism networks.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation are looking into antifa’s ringleaders, funding source, and specific cells operating in America, the Washington Examiner has learned.

FBI agents have been reaching out to riot reporters for intelligence on antifa’s apparatus, making contact with the journalists, all of whom have covered antifa extensively, in the days following a White House roundtable on antifa, sources said.

The inquiries, which occurred over the phone and in person, indicate that federal investigators are taking tangible steps to dismantle far-left domestic terrorism networks after much saber-rattling from the Trump administration.

A source contacted by the FBI told the Washington Examiner that their conversation centered on antifa’s hierarchical structure, with pointed questions about specific antifa cells, the movement’s recruitment tactics, financial backers, and leadership, among other organizational aspects of antifa’s operations.

Another source who spoke with the FBI said the agency sought a broader context about protest activity, asking generally about sources of funding behind recent waves of civil unrest, including the use of online crowdfunding and groups that supply activists with protest materials, such as protective gear, food, flags, and signage.

ANTIFA INC: HOW AN IDEOLOGY BECAME AN ORGANIZED CRIMINAL NETWORK

The source shared with the Washington Examiner that FBI agents were approaching some of the participants who had attended the White House antifa roundtable on Oct. 8.

Individuals invited to the White House, including investigative journalists, briefed President Donald Trump on their first-hand experiences documenting far-left movements over the past several years. The attendees reported what they observed about how these groups organize, communicate, and mobilize, as well as the challenges journalists face while reporting.

According to the source, the FBI’s outreach following the White House event appeared intended to gather situational awareness from individuals with field experience and probe for further information about the latest streak of left-wing agitators and protests outside of immigration facilities in cities like Portland and Chicago.

In an X post, conservative influencer Nick Sortor, who was also in attendance, said the FBI called a number of media figures over the weekend who have been attacked by antifa, including him.

“I received a call from the FBI Sunday morning,” Sortor said, “and confirmed others did as well. The Trump admin WILL take down this terrorist network.”

He added that the FBI has launched a “FULL” investigation into antifa.

The Justice Department’s civil rights division is already investigating Sortor’s “wrongful arrest,” which occurred when he was filming antifa activity outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Portland.

According to Sortor, he had his camera broken by antifa militants who then threw multiple punches at him. But when he alerted Portland police, officers took Sortor into custody “for fighting” on charges of second-degree disorderly conduct.

Sortor is not the only right-wing personality to be talking to the FBI about antifa.

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck said that the FBI appeared at his house to discuss his TV show “exposing Antifa’s network.” On X, Beck said three FBI agents sat down in his living room on Saturday afternoon for a two-hour discussion revolving around antifa.

“If you are a member of Antifa or providing material or financial support for Antifa, I might be a little concerned because the FBI is DEADASS serious about investigating you,” Beck said.

On the same day as the White House roundtable, Beck’s eponymous podcast aired an antifa-themed episode, titled “Unmasking Antifa: The Dark Truth Behind Its Well-Funded Network.”

In it, Beck pointed to financial ties between activist groups organizing the mass protests cropping up across the country and shadowy nonprofit organizations, such as entities owned by billionaire financier George Soros and the left-wing Tides Foundation.

COULD ANTIFA CO-CONSPIRATORS EVER FACE FEDERAL RICO CHARGES?

On Sept. 22, Trump officially designated antifa as a domestic terrorist organization and authorized federal agencies “to investigate, disrupt, and dismantle any and all illegal operations” conducted under the antifa name, including taking prosecutorial action against the movement’s financial sponsors.

In a follow-up presidential decree, Trump directed federal authorities to dismantle terrorism networks operating within the United States using investigative strategies similar to those employed to take down organized crime.

The FBI did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
