A hand grenade explosion has left one man dead and his two teenage children injured in Lakes of the Four Seasons, Indiana. The family had been rummaging through their grandfather’s belongings when they stumbled upon the grenade, which someone had allegedly pulled the pin on, causing the explosion.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after receiving reports of an explosion in the house. Upon arrival, they found the man lying unconscious and his children suffering from shrapnel injuries. The man was later declared dead, while his children were admitted to a nearby hospital. Homicide detectives and a crime scene investigation unit are investigating the incident.

Patrick Dougherty with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said that he was initially “skeptical” about the bomb being active as usually, such ordinances are inert.

Special Agent Patrick Carolan, a bomb technician with the FBI St. Louis Field Office, encourages anyone who thinks they might have stumbled upon an explosive among their loved one’s belongings to call 911 as soon as possible. “We’d much rather come take a look at it and have it be nothing. We don’t want anyone to get hurt,” he said.
