Fans Hated The ‘Dexter New Blood’ Finale; Give It Worst Ratings Of The Franchise On IMDb

“Dexter” fans were apprehensive yet hopeful about the series reboot, “Dexter: New Blood.” The original series, which wrapped in 2013, had a terrible ending where Deb died and Dexter escaped into the unknown. Lead actor Michael C. Hall cited the bad finale as one of the reasons he agreed to the sequel project in the first place.

“People found the way [the] show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling,” Hall told The Daily Beast ahead of the sequel’s premiere. “I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’”

Now that the second series finale has aired, long-time fans finally have their answer, but it looks like they aren’t happy about it.

Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for the season finale of “Dexter: New Blood.”

The proof of everyone’s displeasure is in the ratings. Currently, the finale episode “Sins of the Father” has a 4.6 overall rating, making it the lowest rated episode in the entire franchise – including the original finale that everyone hated. And this comes after previous “New Blood” episodes received scores in the range of 8-9.

So, what happened?

In the finale, Dexter dies after convincing his teenage son Harrison to shoot him. This happens after Dexter decides he’s beyond redemption after killing outside his “code of ethics,” or set of rules he uses to determine who is morally acceptable to kill. Harrison kills his father then escapes with the aid of police chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones), who is Dexter’s ex.

Hall stands by the showrunner’s decision to kill Dexter. “Some people will have predicted it, and some will be shocked by it,” the actor told the Los Angeles Times. “Some people will accept it, some people will reject it. I think it will be difficult for people to grapple with his fate given that he is someone they have spent a lot of time with and have a lot of affection for—at least in some cases.”

“The way the season concludes is one that resonates with me,” Hall continued. “It feels justifiable. As upsetting as it may be, I hope audiences will appreciate the resonance of Dexter dying this way at the hands of his son.”

Fans were mostly annoyed that the series brought Dexter back just to kill him in the end, and they don’t believe Harrison is a strong enough character to pick up the slack.

“Suddenly, Dexter throws away a lifetime of rules and procedures and caution and extreme intelligence and acts like an idiot in order for the writers to bring conclusion. Cheap. Lazy. Unnecessary,” one IMDb reviewer wrote. “They should have just left it alone!”

“All I’ll say is that Dexter is truly a record breaking TV show, it’s one of a kind. Because it’s one of the only shows to have TWO absolutely AWFUL endings that everybody universally hates,” another reviewer agreed. “Writers, you should all hang your heads in shame.”
