Eva Longoria Calls Out Hollywood’s Double Standard for Women and Minorities
Actress, director, and producer Eva Longoria recently spoke out against Hollywood’s double standard when it comes to the success or failure of movies. As a Latina female director, Longoria feels that she is held to a different standard than white men.
During her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in France, Longoria discussed the weight she felt as a member of her community during her feature directorial debut of “Flamin’ Hot.” She stated that female directors don’t get many opportunities to direct big-budget films and that the last Latina-directed studio film was 20 years ago.

Longoria went on to say that if her movie fails, people will say that Latino stories don’t work and that female directors don’t cut it. She believes that white male directors have more opportunities to direct big-budget films, even if they fail. Longoria stated that she only gets one chance to direct a film and has to work twice as hard, twice as fast, and twice as cheap as her male counterparts.
“Flamin’ Hot” tells the inspiring true story of Richard Montañez, a Frito Lay janitor who turned Flamin’ Hot Cheetos into a global pop culture phenomenon by channeling his Mexican heritage. Longoria believes that the movie also deals with how corporate America underestimates the Hispanic community, and the same could be said about Hollywood studios.
Longoria pointed out that 28% of ticket buyers at the box office are Latino, and movies won’t succeed without the Latino audience. She believes that Hollywood should create more content for Latinos since they are the ticket buyers and viewers. Longoria takes pride in the buying power of the Latino community and believes that if Hollywood doesn’t speak to them, they won’t buy movie tickets.
“Flamin’ Hot” will hit theaters on June 9, and Longoria hopes that it will inspire Hollywood to create more opportunities for women and minorities.
