ESPN Fires Veteran Baseball Reporter for Using Derogatory Language

Marly Rivera, a 13-year veteran baseball reporter at ESPN, has been fired after using derogatory language towards freelance reporter Ivon Gaete. The incident occurred when Rivera informed Gaete of her planned interview with New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge, which Gaete also wanted to conduct. The argument escalated, and Rivera called Gaete a derogatory term.

ESPN confirmed Rivera’s termination, stating, “She no longer works here.” Rivera attempted to apologize, but Gaete refused to accept it. Rivera took full responsibility for her actions, stating, “I should not have said what I did.”

Previous Incidents

After Rivera’s firing, it was revealed that she had previous confrontations with other members of the media. She called a reporter competing with her to take photos of a Hispanic player a “white b****” and a fellow Latino reporter a “fake Hispanic.”

Professional Disagreements

Rivera believes that she is being singled out by a group of individuals with whom she has a long history of professional disagreements. She has a sterling reputation across baseball and has appeared on Sunday Night Baseball telecasts and serves as an ESPN Radio MLB playoff game analyst.

As the first woman baseball writer to be an analyst on a national broadcast and only the second Latina to do so after her colleague Jess Mendoza, Rivera hopes to inspire others who do not believe that whatever they hope to accomplish in their own lives is possible.
