EPA Orders States To Stop Blocking Toxic Waste Shipments From Ohio Train Derailment

Michael Regan, EPA Administrator ordered states to stop blocking toxic chemicals shipments from the accident site at Norfolk Southern in Ohio.

To reduce the chance of an explosion, local and state authorities evacuated everyone within one mile of the derailment in East Palestine on February 3. The five train cars that were involved in the fire of vinyl chloride, a known human cancergen, produced massive plumes of black smoke throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.

According to media reports, officials from the EPA attempted to transport the toxic waste previously to facilities across the country, including a landfill located in Roachdale in Indiana and a waste management center in Waynoka in Oklahoma. The former site is over 400 miles from East Palestine while the latter is close to 1,200 miles from the rustbelt community.

Governor Eric Holcomb, R-IN, stated last month that he has learned “third-hand” He claimed that toxic substances would be shipped to his state, and that they should be. “the nearest facilities, not moved from the far eastern side of Ohio to the far western side of Indiana.” Republican Governor Kevin Stitt (R. OK) also stated Sunday that he had worked closely with lawmakers to stop the material from reaching his state. “There are too many unanswered questions and ultimately I made the decision that this is not in the best interest of Oklahomans,” Stitt commented. “As of late last night that shipment has been blocked.”

Regan said Friday that he sent notices to the states demanding that they accept the shipments. “No one should impede or prevent this cleanup as we return East Palestine to the beautiful community residents know it to be,” He announced it via social media. “The residents of East Palestine should expect that states, private companies, and the federal government will work together to effectuate the swift cleanup they deserve.”

East Palestine residents are frustrated at the lack of transparency by officials from Norfolk Southern and executives, particularly in relation to the purported clean bills of health they gave the community’s water and air supplies. A number of East Palestinian residents have complained about sore throats and other respiratory problems. This includes a team made up of journalists from The Daily Wire and a group of producers and editors.

Last month, Carnegie Mellon University and Texas A&M University analysts announced that nine chemicals found on the train derailed were now in higher concentrations than usual in East Palestine. Ivan Rusyn, Texas A&M Superfund Research Center director, told The Daily Wire environmental officials have not provided any information. “the full context into which the actual data collected by them could be placed,” Particularly in light of the long-term health hazards posed by some chemicals.

Norfolk Southern has been ordered by the EPA, to collect samples for dioxins. These invisible particles can attach to soil particles or last for many years in an environment. The substances are “highly toxic and can cause cancer, reproductive and developmental problems, damage to the immune system, and can interfere with hormones,” According to a fact sheet provided by the EPA.
