She mentions that atmospheric optical effects, such as halos around the sun, can be observed due to the reflection of sunlight by the sand and dust particles.

According to KVUE-TV, this year’s dust cloud is not unusual. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains that the Saharan Air Layer, which carries the dust, typically occupies a 2 to 2.5-mile-thick layer of the atmosphere, starting about 1 mile above the surface.

AccuWeather Director of Forecast Operations Dan DePodwin assures that Saharan dust is common most years and its location and magnitude can vary throughout the season.

While the dust cloud may not be rare, forecasters warn that it could still have an impact on the Southeastern United States.
