Democrats are open to collaborating with Republicans to elect Emmer as the new speaker.
House Democrats Open to Clearing the Way for Tom Emmer as Speaker
House Democrats are willing to step aside and support House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) as the next speaker, but with certain conditions. They want assurance that key policy issues, such as funding the government and aid bills for Ukraine and Israel, will be brought to the House floor.
Leadership in the Democratic caucus believes that Emmer is the best option among the seven GOP candidates. If Emmer agrees to their demands, Democrats would be open to sitting out the vote and giving him the necessary support to become speaker.
How House Republicans Will Choose Their Next Speaker Nominee
This move would mean fewer votes for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), reducing the majority and increasing Emmer’s chances of winning the speakership.
Even Emmer’s fellow Minnesotan, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), is willing to sit out the vote if Emmer meets the Democrats’ requirements. Phillips expressed his concerns about the dysfunction in the House and emphasized the need for government funding, aid bills, and rules changes to benefit the people.
However, Emmer has made it clear that he has no intention of negotiating with the Democrats and wants to secure the speakership solely through Republican votes.
The House will convene for the fourth round of speaker votes, with eight candidates in the running after Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) dropped out of the race.
Since the removal of McCarthy, House Republicans have nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) as speaker candidates. However, neither has been able to gather the necessary votes to win the office, leading them to withdraw from the race.
