California Leads the Nation in Electric Vehicle Adoption
California drivers are embracing electric vehicles at an impressive rate, outpacing the rest of the country. According to a report by the California New Car Dealers Association, electric vehicles accounted for nearly 22 percent of the state’s new vehicle market in the first nine months of 2023.
In the third quarter of 2023, California surpassed the national average for new electric vehicle registrations by a full percentage point, achieving a 13.3 percent improvement over 2022. This surge in electric vehicle adoption contributed to a total of almost 1.4 million new vehicle registrations in the state during the first nine months of the year.
Interestingly, the percentage of buyers opting for traditional vehicles with internal-combustion engines decreased, dropping from 72 percent in 2022 to 65 percent in 2023. In contrast, electric vehicle and hybrid car purchases increased to 35 percent of all sales, a significant jump from 12 percent in 2018.

Tesla dominates the electric vehicle market in California, capturing nearly 63 percent of all new electric vehicle registrations by September. The California New Car Dealers Association predicts that the state will end the year with 1.8 million new vehicle registrations and expects an additional 1.88 million in 2024.
“Pent-up demand remains high since the pandemic and is estimated to continue supporting new vehicle sales for years to come,” stated the association in a press release.
However, high interest rates are making cars less affordable as household savings accounts are depleted. Additionally, the recent United Auto Workers strike and its impact on new vehicle sales are factors to watch closely.
