E. Jean Carroll seeks new damages from Trump after CNN Town Hall.

E. Jean Carroll Seeks More Damages from Trump Over CNN Town Hall Comments

Writer E. Jean Carroll has filed a court document seeking more money from former President Donald Trump over comments he made about her during a CNN town hall. The filing is connected to a pending 2019 lawsuit against Trump, in which Carroll accused him of raping her in a New York City department store in the 1990s. While a jury rejected her claim, they awarded her $5 million for defamation and sexual abuse. Trump is currently appealing the verdict.

Trump’s Comments

During the town hall, Trump called Carroll a “whack job” and relayed his version of the story, claiming he had never met her and that the alleged incident never happened. Carroll’s court filing argues that Trump’s comments show “the depth of his malice toward Carroll” and asks the judge to allow her to revise her claim to include the jury verdict and the town hall comments. Carroll’s lawyer also claimed that Trump is threatening to sue Carroll in retaliation.

Carroll’s Response

Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta A. Kaplan, stated that Trump’s comments “make a mockery of the jury verdict and our justice system if he can just keep on repeating the same defamatory statements over and over again.” The court filing seeks a substantial punitive damages award in Carroll’s favor to punish Trump and deter him from engaging in further defamation, as well as to deter others from doing the same.
